After one day of heavy rain, I arrived in Fox Glacier and the weather turns out to be just perfect the next morning. In the 1860's, the Glacier was named after William Fox, the Premier of New Zealand at this time. Before my Heli-hike, I am going to walk around Lake Matheson and view some stunning views of the Fox Glacier and mountain reflection.
Mt Cook (3754m) and Mt Tasman (3491m) are the highest picks. The best time to go to see the reflection in the lake is in the early morning: at that time the water is mirror like and there is no wind.
The river flowing in Lake Matheson has a red pigmentation color due to vegetation residues. This dark color helps make the lake mirror like. |
