Russel in just 5 minute ferry ride from Opua, Bay of Islands.
There is a small Post Office/shop but you better hurry post your letter or the ferry will leave without you! I almost had to jump on. Hopefully, the ferry reversed and I could get on safely. If you miss the ferry, don't worry, they will come back 15 minutes later :-) Russel is a small historic village with a few art'n'craft shops, delightful coffee shops on the waterfront and nice secluded beaches such as at Tapeka Point.
A freshly baked painting:
It's possible to access Russel from a back road instead of the ferry but you better have a good sens or orientation and plenty of time. From Russel, this road starts near Orango Bay ans skirts along the Waikare Inlet before reaching the Waikare Road to Waihaha. It's about 90 minutes drive. |
